As the school year comes to a close and summer approaches, one sport continues its dominance for old and young people alike. All across the nation, basketball and tennis courts are being converted as the fairly recent sport of pickleball continues its skyward trend, being the fastest-growing sport for the third year in a row, predicted to climb 7.7% annually.

As the trend of VR is just hitting it’e peak, many applications for the immersive technology are being created. Originally created as a way to immerse people in a video-like experience to enhance the cinema experience, VR has grown to be a multi-billion dollar industry, with new technology in video-games, job-training, health relaxation, and more recently, sports.

There’s no denying the impact sports have on us. Throughout history, sports has gathered thousands of people to watch different events, whether is was the massive gladiatorial spectacles in the roman times, or more modern stadium packed with football fans.

In July 2005, Lance Armstrong won his seventh consecutive Tour de France victory, the most famous cycling tournament of them all, cementing his status as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Seven years later, Armstrong was accused of doping and drug trafficking by the USADA, and in a heartbreaking moment, was stripped of all seven of his Tour de France medals, and banned from further competitions.

Right now, Asian people comprise 6.3% of the total current US population, black people 13.6%, and hispanic people around 19.1%. When comparing the percentage of Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians in the current US population to their prevalence in modern popular sports, there are some common trends.

It’s no secret that early sports were limited to people with white skin. Black people were banned, and Hispanic, Asian, and Native Americans could only play if their skin was light enough. In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first Black player in the MLB, and since then, the integration of other races into professional sports has increased dramatically.

It’s 8:50 in the morning, your alarm rings. It’s December 18th, 2022. You quickly rush to the TV, and turn on the game that you’ve been waiting for a month now. Across the world, 1.5 billion other people do the same. It’s the world cup final, and more than 20% of the world is watching.
